THC is a crappy drug all by itself; that’s why there’s no Marinol (synthetic THC) black market. Cannabis has 600+ goodies inside, including yummy, yummy terpenes. The three most common terpenes are the ones that usually affect you most too: myrcene, limonene, and caryophyllene.

Myrcene is the most common terpene and will give you a stronger, more sedate high. Without other ingredients to balance myrcene out, decide on a movie, because you’re not leaving the couch for a while. Its rich, sweet, earthy smell is the one you associate with cannabis. Myrcene helps THC penetrate the blood-brain barrier, so it gets you higher. Most indica has lots of myrcene in it, but so do some sativas; speedy Durban Poison owes its kick in part to myrcene.

Limonene is the citrus yin to myrcene’s earthy yang; it makes everything brighter and it energizes you. It’s also why you like lemon in your iced tea, and why sucking on a lemon before imbibing will add energy to your buzz. This terpene is your best bet for an active day. Limonene’s blood-brain penetration works with THC to kick both into overdrive.

Caryophyllene is the scent of spices and pepper and is in all cannabis and what drug dogs are trained to sniff out. Caryophyllene is the only terpene that bonds to CB2 receptors; a part of your endocannabinoid system that is normally only affected by cannabinoids. It also crosses the blood-brain barrier and works specially with our other two terpenes. THC, caryophyllene and myrcene combine to kill pain and inflammation, and with limonene, combines to give a clearer, more energetic high than THC and limonene alone. Caryophyllene is a great addition to any strain, and part of what makes cannabis do the things it do.

More terpene stuff next week.
